- Bordetella pertussis bacteria, SEM x5,000
Scanning electron microscope image of Bordetella pertussis - Gram-negative, aerobic, nonmotile, coccobacillus prokaryote (bacterium) that causes whooping cough, or pertussis. About the image technique: Modern technologies such as electron microscopy can give finer detail to bacteria than optical (light) microscopy and can even be used to show internal features. Electron micrographs are black-and-white images generated by high-energy beams of electrons. The micrographs are sometimes given a false color to make them visually appealing (in this case, a green tint was used).
